Mississippi bluesman/songwriter Travis “Moonchild” Haddix makes his first Northwest appearance at this year’s Waterfront Blues Festival, backed by Portland’s Rose City Kings.
Travis was born in 1938 in Hatchie Bottom, Mississippi to a family of sharecroppers. When he was 9, his family moved to Walnut, Mississippi, a “big city with a bank, a post office, a Western Auto store, and a cotton gin.” Travis was taught guitar by his father, Chalmus “Rooster” Haddix, a Delta Blues style player. Travis was inspired when the legendary B.B. King came to Memphis and began playing daily at the studios of WDIA. Travis took up the guitar and hung around the radio station every day to learn all he could.
As an adult, he earned the nickname “Moonchild” from his beaming presence on stage and his always broad smile and energetic, sexy performances. Travis has written over 500 songs and recorded 32 albums and CDs. His material has been covered by Artie “Bluesboy” White, Dickie Williams, Jimmy Dawkins, Michael Burks, Charles Wilson, Son Seals, and Lee Shot Williams. “Begging Business”, “Bag Lady”, and “Everything is Everything” are some that have been recorded by others. “Everything is Everything” is featured in the film April’s Fool. Travis has received rave reviews in Living Blues Magazine, Blues Revue, Real Blues, and many others. He has toured throughout the United States and Europe.
TRAVIS’ style evokes the sounds of the great Stax-Volt days, when the likes of Sam & Dave ruled the urban blues roost.
